It is used as a food plant and for rickets’, allergy’s, diathesis’, kidney stones’, goiter’s, diabetes’, cholecystitis’, hepatitis’, constipation’s, hemorrhoids’, eczema’s, psoriasis’, arthritis’, baldness’, furunculosis’, rashes’ treatment; also, for fever’s, mastopathy’s and delayed menstruation’s treatment.
It acts as a diaphoretic, diuretic, fever reducing, anti inflammatory, antitoxic, vitamin, hypoglycemic, metabolic, laxative, choleretic, anti itch remedy. For healing purposes are used its flowers, leaves, roots, seeds, juice.

Leaves:
Young – go to salads, soups, spices, pickles. A wonderful source of vitamin C.
Mature leaves are gathered during the flowering period without stems, are dried and crushed.
Roots:
Dig out, remove the soil, remove rotten and dead parts. Wash, cut lengthwise and dry at a temperature up to 50°C.
If you grind the roots with crushing, then drying is faster and quality’s loss is minimal. Subsequently, dried root’s plates are easily ground into flour.
First year’s burdock’s roots are harvested after the first frosts, and in the spring – before the appearance of 3-4 leaves.
Seeds:
Harvest during the period of full maturity, after the first frosts, while digging up the first year’s roots (always put a few baskets of seeds into the holes!).
The baskets are dried, the seeds are hammered (taken out). This is a strong diuretic remedy (decoction 1:10), 1 glass in 3-4 doses.
Flowers:
Picked and dried (May-June). It is used as a strong anti allergenic remedy, especially for skin diseases, bronchial asthma and so on.
Dosage forms
Leaf powder:
1 teaspoon 3-5 times a day before eating with water, tea, for gastrointestinal, skin diseases, for gout.
Root powder:
1 teaspoon 3-5 times a day before eating for diabetes and its prophylaxis. Take for 3 weeks with the same break.
Leaf decoction:
1 tablespoon of crushed leaves in 1 glass of water, leave for 20 minutes. In a water bath (or boil for 5 minutes), leave for 1 hour, strain. Take 1 tablespoon 3-4 times a day before eating. Regulates (weakens) digestion, helps baldness, removes salts. For joints’, osteochondrosis’ treatment in a bath, drink 3-5 glasses of this decoction with honey in sips, apply burdock’s ointment on the diseased joints.
Root infusion:
2 tablespoons of crushed roots boil in 400 ml of water for 20-30 minutes, leave for half an hour, strain. It is used for lotions: furuncles, wounds, itchy dermatoses, baldness.
Seed infusion:
1 tablespoon of seeds in 200 ml of water leave for 30 minutes. In a water bath leave for 1 hour. Take 50 ml 2-3 times a day before eating to prevent swelling.
Leaf juice:
Clean leaves are cut (without washing with water), are put through a meat grinder, are squeezed by hand, with a juicer or with a press. Are mixed in a 1:1 volume ratio with granulated sugar. Vodka or spirit is added so, that alcohol’s share in the finished mixture is 8-10%. Stored in the refrigerator or cellar for 1 year. Daily dose – 2-3 tablespoons in herbal infusion or 1 tablespoon pour in half a glass of water 2-3 times a day before eating. Course – 3 months.
Fresh root:
- Method 1: Wash well, grate on a coarse grater, mix with honey 1:1, store in the refrigerator. Take 1 tablespoon 2 times a day before eating.
- Method 2: Grated root mix with cognac and lemon 1:1:1. Take 1 tablespoon 2 times a day half an hour before eating – improves metabolism, digestion, prevents aging, is used for diabetes.
Oil for hair:
On 500 gr of vegetable oil 200 gr of root ground into flour. Boil for 3 days, stir from time to time, leave in a water bath for 2-3 hours, cool and strain. Rub into hair’s roots during baldness 2 times a week for 2 months and also apply for itchy dermatosis (neurodermatitis, eczema, psoriasis).
Root tincture:
Crushed raw roots are poured with 40% spirit or vodka in a 1:3, 1:5 ratio for 2 weeks. Filter. Take 1 teaspoon 3-4 times a day with water or herbal infusion.
Dry root tincture:
On vodka or 40% spirit in a 1:10 ratio with 2 weeks of infusion. Fresh roots’ tincture is a more effective form.
Ointment:
150 gr of crushed dry root mix with 500 gr of vegetable or petroleum oil, leave for 5 days stirring, leave in a water bath for 1 hour. Cool, strain. It is good for eczema, burns, wounds’ healing.
